Remembering Arnie

I was absolutely stunned by the news that Arnie Hakala had died. He was crusty, cantankerous, he could swear with the best of them, and he was one of the most caring persons that I have met. He was a reporter and columnist for the North Bay Nugget.
He lived here in Marten River for a time, and I met him way back in 1989 when I was flagging on the highway. I stopped him and we had a good conversation and I found out that he had been a newspaper reporter in Toronto. When I worked at a restaurant here a few years later, he was living in a trailer there for a time. He had his ups and downs and this was one of the hard times. We got to know each other and had some good laughs while he was there.
When he went to the "Nugget" and started writing a column, I enjoyed reading it, and through his writing I seemed to get to know him even better. I saw him from time to time when he would drive up to this area to cover a story. There was the time when he knocked on our door and came in to use the phone (there were no cell phones then!), when he was up here to cover the story of the man who was running around in the bush and he had taken shots at his family afer an argument. He was hiding and lost in the bush country around here and there were police and helicopters everywhere. Arnie had to get hold of the paper and let them know what was happening. He stayed for a coffee and a visit and was furiously writing his notes at the time. I would always see him when he came up here for the Marten River logger's day at our provincial park. He would take a lot of his own photographs for the paper to cover a story and there were some great photos that he captured.
I will miss him.

Making Patio Stones

Boy, did we have fun playing in the cement making our patio stones this past Wed. Some of us
got very creative. For those of you who couldn't attend, I made a collage of the pictures that I
took that I hope you will enjoy.
